Sunningdale Foursomes

County professionals Ryan Evans and Charley Hull were denied the opportunity to compete for the Sunningdale Foursomes Trophy after the prestigious pairs event was cancelled due to the snow.

The duo did have the chance to play on a cold, but playable, opening day as they thrashed Steven Rojas and Ben Rusch 6&5 in the first round on the Old Course at the Berkshire venue.

As the weather gradually deteriorated over the next 24 hours, Evans and Hull were unable to complete their second round match with Barney Foreman and Mark Foreman the following morning.

With such a tight schedule of matches to be played over four days, and no obvious sign that the weather would improve, the event organisers made the decision to call the tournament off.

Evans joked: β€œAt least we can say we were joint-winners of the 2023 Sunningdale Foursomes Trophy! But we are gutted it was called off because we felt we had a good chance this year.”

Fellow Northamptonshire golfers Callum Farr and Gary Boyd, who is playing on the European Challenge Tour this season, had already been knocked out on the first day.

Boyd and Ladies European Tour pro Amy Boulden recorded a big win in the morning, but lost on the 18th hole in round two, while Farr and playing partner Nicola Slater were also beaten down the last in their opening contest.
