Jones and Williams in contention for Walker Cup

Northamptonshire have two players under serious consideration for the GB & Ireland Walker Cup team later this year after Ben Jones (Northants County) and Robin Williams (Peterborough Milton) were included in the initial squad of 26 players.
The biennial encounter will be played at Royal Liverpool GC from September 7th-8th as the team aim to win back the trophy after losing 19-7 in Los Angeles two years ago.
Captain Craig Watson said: “We have selected a talented group of players who are all in contention for a place in the team and will be continuing to monitor the form and results of these players over the course of the season.”
Jones will have done his chances of selection no harm whatsoever this week with a starring performance for England in their 13-7 victory over Spain as the mixed team lifted the Seve Ballesteros Trophy in difficult weather conditions at Formby GC.
Playing in winds gusting around 50mph, Jones combined with Baily Gill to record a 5&4 foursomes victory on the first day, a one-hole win the following morning, before he scored the winning point by holing a 35-foot birdie putt to clinch his singles match 3&2.
He admitted: “It’s always nice to do that, but as long as the team wins it doesn’t matter who takes us over the line. For the team to win is always great!”
